The business meeting and the talk (12:30 - 2:00 pm) will be on Zoom this year for those who can’t attend in person. Below is our tentative agenda - times are EDT. Expect another email in May with more details.

9:30 to 11:30 am - coffee & donuts, socializing, archives on display, giveaways
11:30 to 12:30 pm - lunch, BYO or bring in from a local eatery
12:30 to 1:00 - Business meeting
1:00 to 2:00 - Speaker, Richard Wiggin on Hartwells in the Revolutionary War
2:00 - Group photograph
3:00 - Private tour of the Hartwell Tavern

Welcome to John Hartwell
John joined us on the Executive Committee earlier this year as a Vice President. He hails from Branford, Connecticut, and is helping us by scanning material from the Hartwell archives and driving several new projects. John will bring his scanner to the Reunion if people have their own material to potentially share on our website.

Announcements - February 28, 2025
A new batch of historical and genealogical documents have been posted to our website over the past few months. I found the report issued after the 1891 Hartwell Family Association (predecessor to our Hartwells of America organization) reunion quite interesting. To see this, go to to the Reunion / Past Reunions / 1890s page at the very bottom and click on the title page "Eighth Annual Reunion..." to view or download all 19 pages. The report recaps the Reunion, followed by an extensive Genealogical report starting on p. 6, the Constitution on pp. 16-17, Queries on p. 18 (I found a query about my 4th gr-grandfather Daniel Hartwell here!) and a Genealogy Prospectus on p. 19. It's a fascinating 130+ year old account of the organized pursuit of Hartwell genealogy knowledge.

There are also several new documents linked from the Genealogy / Archives page. These include a 43-page document on the Hartwell House and Tavern, and a 10-page excerpt of Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution listing Hartwell men with their rank and service information. There are also directories of Hartwell cousins here for the years 1941, 1947, 1952 and 1958. Hopefully you will find items of interest in one or more of these documents and/or on other pages of our website.

I hope you will consider joining us for the 88th HOA annual Reunion in Concord, Massachusetts, on Saturday, June 21, 2025. Find details on the Reunion page. If weather permits, we hope to take a field trip to the Hartwell Tavern in Minuteman National Historical Park in Lincoln after the business meeting.

Don't forget the Scholarships we award annually to deserving Hartwell cousins to help defray the cost of their education. Find details on the Scholarship page of our website, and note that applications are due June 7.

Finally, consider paying your annual dues for the fiscal year 2024-25, ending June 30. Your contribution helps defray the cost of our annual Reunion, our scholarships and our genealogy activities. The Store page has a convenient method to pay online and also has instructions for paying by check. You can also purchase recent Genealogies here if you do not already have one.

Please feel free to email any additions or potential corrections to our genealogy to our genealogist, Marilyn Booth Manzella. Contact information for her and any of us can always be found on the Contact page of our website.

We hope to see you at Reunion, but in the meantime please stay in touch via email and/or either of the Hartwells of America Facebook groups (see Contact page).

Cousinly,
Stephen Hartwell,
Hartwells of America

The 87th Annual Hartwells of America Reunion and Business Meeting was held at the Trinitarian Church in Concord, Massachusetts, on Saturday, June 29, 2024. See photos and a recap on the Reunion / Past Reunions / 2020s / 2024 page.
Email - May 2024
The following email below was sent on May 30, 2024 to everyone in our membership database. If you would like to be added to the list to receive communications from us, please consider joining us by clicking on Dues on the Store page.

Dear Hartwell Cousin,

We trust that this communication finds you well, and hope that you will consider attending our in-person Hartwells of America Annual Reunion next month (June 29) in Concord, Massachusetts. More information about the Reunion can be found in our just-published 2024 Newsletter (.pdf only, no printed copy being mailed) on our website at https://www.hartwellclan.org/reunion.html (click the 2024 newsletter image to read). The seven-page newsletter is full of updated information about our programs and projects, including Scholarships and Archives, as well as an introduction to our new Vice President Sam Hartwell and reports from last year’s reunion. You should also note that this year’s Reunion marks the 140th anniversary of the first Hartwells of America gathering back in 1884!

If you have not paid your membership Dues for 2025 (fiscal year ending June 30, 2025), now is the time to do so. This will ensure that you continue to receive communications from us and will also support our reunions, scholarships and other programs. Dues are only $10/year and convenient options for payment are available on our website on the Store page.

We are looking forward to greeting Hartwell cousins old and new in a month! Let us know if you have comments or questions, , and please feel free to forward this email to other Hartwells who might be interested.

Sincerely yours,
Hartwells of America

Wayne Hartwell, President
Sam Hartwell, Vice President
Stephen Hartwell, Treasurer and Membership
Marilyn Booth Manzella, Scholarship Chair
Announcement - March 2024
We have published a new updated Hartwell Genealogy Flash Drive featuring Generations 1-12! See our Flash Drive page for more information.
Email - November 2023
The following email below was sent on November 15, 2023 to everyone in our membership database. If you would like to be added to the list to receive communications from us, please consider joining us by clicking on Dues on the Store page.

Greetings fellow Hartwells,

The Hartwells of America is pleased to begin using email as our preferred form of communication.

New Website
We have created a new website https://hartwellclan.org/ to replace the previous one at hartwell.org, which is being retired. Steve will assume the role of webmaster, as Wes Hartwell is stepping down. Thank you, Wes, for your many years of service.

The new website will let you pay your annual dues online if desired - see our Store page. You can also purchase our genealogy items there and/or make a donation to our Association.

Dues Notice
Because of the ever-increasing cost of Association operating expenses, annual Dues have been raised from $5 to $10, effective for the current fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. To our Dues-paying members, thank you as always for your continued support.

Other News Items
We have a new officer! Sam Hartwell of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, has been elected to serve as our Vice President. He has a background in nonprofit leadership and private investment. Sam has so far contributed a scan of a Hartwell heirloom to our newsletter (see June 24, 2023, p. 2) and promises more to come.

With the passing of our long-time genealogist Joy Peach last fall, Marilyn Manzella has been working diligently to compile and format Joy's research to extend our genealogy to more generations. This will result in the eventual publication of an updated flash drive containing .pdf genealogies of Generations 1 thru 12 (currently 9) of the descendants of William Hartwell (1613-1690), our immigrant ancestor. Stay tuned for progress updates.

Marilyn reports that our three 2023 Hartwell Scholarship recipients have each been sent their $500 awards. Information and an application for 2024 can be found on the Scholarship page of our website.

Steve notes that our Y-DNA project continues to grow, as we learn more about the genetic ancestry of our direct Hartwell lineage. See details under Y-DNA on the Genealogy / Other Projects page. We are especially looking for male descendants of William’s son John (1640-1702) and any Hartwells from England to take the Big Y-700 test.

Reunion 2024
Save the Date! Our Reunion is traditionally held on the last Saturday in June. For the coming year, the 87th Anniversary Reunion will be June 29, 2024. Our location will be the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 50 Walden St, near the center of Concord, Massachusetts. Look for more information about Reunion 2024 in an upcoming email.

We welcome your ideas and feedback! Feel free to reply to any or all of us.

Sincerely,
Wayne Hartwell, President
Sam Hartwell, Vice President
Steve Hartwell, Treasurer
Marilyn Manzella, Scholarship Chair
